The Rest I Make Up
May 9, 2022

Screening of a documentary about playwright María Irene Fornés followed by a talkback with filmmaker Michelle Memran
About this event
As a prelude to Thinking Cap Theatre’s production of FEFU AND HER FRIENDS, TCT in association with MAD Arts and “10 Days of Connection” (https://www.10daysofconnection.org/) will present a special screening of THE REST I MAKE UP, filmmaker Michelle Memran’s documentary portrait of the playwright María Irene Fornés.
The film, which premiered in February 2018 at the MOMA, was named one of the year’s best films by Richard Brody of the New Yorker. THE REST I MAKE UP distills fifteen years of moments between the filmmaker and the playwright into an emotionally raw and poetic eighty-minutes. The two artists enjoyed a nearly two-decade friendship that began when filmmaker Memran interviewed the playwright, who was then in her sixties. Memran had wanted to write a play and sought advice from Fornés, who had herself stopped writing but didn’t know why; Fornés was suffering from soon-to-be diagnosed Alzheimer’s disease. The film documents the playwright’s journey with the illness and Memran’s regimen of creative care for Fornés.
The screening of THE REST I MAKE UP will be followed by a TALKBACK WITH FILMMAKER MICHELLE MEMRAN.
