This fall, we embarked on a collaboration between MadLabs, Mad Arts, and Miami City Ballet. What resulted was Leviathan’s Lair, an underwater projection-mapping experience created to complement A Midsummer Night’s Dream — Miami City Ballet’s magical retelling that brought South Florida’s ecosystem to life on stage.
While remaining faithful to George Balanchine’s choreography, this production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream — which premiered as part of the company’s 30th anniversary — was uniquely reimagined for South Florida audiences, transforming the ballet’s traditional woodland setting into a vibrant, underwater seascape.
With Michele Oka Doner’s transformative costumes and sets, the kingdom of magical fairies became a floating motif of coral and seagrass populated by manatees, seahorses, and more underwater life, evoking the heart of South Florida’s treasured marine ecosystems. Welcoming you to a realm of otherworldly beauty, Leviathan’s Lair was designed to celebrate the region’s unique beauty, with its captivating coral reefs, lush seagrasses, and diverse marine life.
